Interview with Cara Faith Donovan from the Tears of Crimson Vampire Bar in New Orleans
By: Julie McAuthur, New Orleans, LA
TOC: Thank you so much for taking a few minutes to sit down with us Cara. So how did you first find the Tears of Crimson Bar, and what made you decide to accept a job as waitress here?
Cara: You're welcome, it gives me a few minutes to take a break. This place has been packed all night. I was actually singing out in the Quarter for tips when I heard about an opening at the club. I moved here from Alabama a few months ago, and well places to live aren't cheap, so I needed to make more money than what I was making. Rafe offered me the job, and there was no way I was gonna turn it down.
TOC: It must have been a real culture shock moving from Alabama to the heart of the French Quarter?
Cara: You could definitely say that. My little town in Rockford, Alabama only had about 1,000 folks living in it and most of our entertainment was from church socials. It's really been exciting seeing how the rest of the world lives, and sometimes I have to pinch myself to prove it's not a dream that I'm living here.
TOC: So what do you think about working for a vampire bar, that has to be a huge culture shock?
Cara: I'll be honest, the first night I worked here, I was so scared I barely managed to hold on to my tray. After a while though, I got used to the folks here and they really aren't much different than other people. They just like to play dress-up and stuff.
TOC: So none of the people here are really vampires?
Cara: I'm sure not at liberty to discuss that one! All I can say is if there are real vampires in the world, I'm not aware of it. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I want to know.
TOC: So tell us more about your boss, Rafe. I've heard he has a few bars with this same theme?
Cara: I really don't know much about the other clubs. Anthony, that's our bouncer, he's traveled with my boss for a few years, so he'd probably be the one to ask about that.
TOC: I'll have to see if I can pin him down for an interview later. One last question and I'll let you get back to work Cara. Could you tell our readers why they should visit Tears of Crimson?
Cara: That's an easy one. Tears of Crimson really is the most unique club in the Quarter. Our Dj, Armon, he also hires bands from all over the world, making sure that we've got the greatest goth bands around. And I can't forget Dante, that's our cook. He serves up some of the best Louisiana cooking I've ever tasted. It's just a great place to come hang out and enjoy yourself.
