Discover... Author Morgan Gallagher

Author Morgan Gallagher

Morgan Gallagher is in her late 40s, and should know better, about spending her writing life with vampires. However, she has no choice, as they refuse to go away and leave her alone. She lives in the Scottish Borders, with her husband and their six year old son. A full time carer for her husband who is severely disabled, Morgan also works as a volunteer for several charities and is passionate about the rights of babies, children and mothers. She has campaigned vigorously against child detention during immigration procedures. She and her husband home educate their son and attempt to keep a never ending stream of cats under control. The North Sea pounds their fishing village every winter, and every major storm, the entire family are to be found in the car parked on the headland admiring the view. Apart from the cats, that is, who are at home dreaming of summer.

Broken lives and shattered dreams.

Two horror short stories: one occult thriller novella. (45, 461 words)

Sleet Dreams

Maggie can just about survive the winter when it turns the city into a trap of ice and snow. She can juggle her pension, scrimp and scrape, make every penny stretch. Every winter she swears she’ll make it to the south next year. South to where winters are gentle and snow never touches the land, to where the wind will never bite into her bones. This winter all Maggie is dreaming of is a warm coat and a better pair of boots. Maggie finds a fur coat one day, a fine fur coat that keeps her warm, keeps out the winter. But dreams are sometimes nightmares and not all wishes should come true.
(11,563 words)

Alma Mater

Alma is a perfect mother. She knows how to raise a child. Her daughter Catherine will be perfect in every way. Alma will make sure of it. No clingy brat ruling the house with her cries and tricks. No fuss, bother or disturbance. No demands from a greedy baby or sulks from a temper driven toddler. Order and routine from day one will ensure that as Catherine grows, hair will always be neat and homework will always be done. Catherine will know how to behave and what to do and what to say and she will be thin, beautiful, gifted and obedient, and any mother would be proud to have such a daughter. That things may not go to plan never occurs to Alma. Just as it never occurs to her that
sometimes you can do a job too well.  (7,024 words)

The Fool

When the body of a young man is found on the altar of the Mother of All Sorrows Church in
Peckham, London, the Catholic Church does everything it can to help Scotland Yard in the
investigation. It sends an independent investigator from the Office of the Congregation of the
Arcane to assist. Maryam Michael isn’t happy, however, with it being London and she’s unhappy that the parish priest she’s supposed to be helping is fast becoming the main suspect. The Vatican is not going to be happy with what was hidden under the body: and neither is the local Mosque. Maryam only has a couple of days to solve the riddle of why this young man died on the altar, and if the supernatural is involved. Can she solve the murder fast enough to prevent Father Wyn Jones being charged? Is it straightforward gang violence, or are there occult forces attacking the Church?
(26,874 words)

The Fool is the first story in the Maryam Michael Mysteries series and the second chapter, The Magician, will be out next year.

Taking a bite out of... J Bryden Lloyd

Author:  J Bryden Lloyd

We lured Bryden into our lair today and found him simply delightful.  We at Tears of Crimson are fascinated with science fiction and have to admit it was difficult to allow him to leave because his stories were so compelling.  Pull up a bar stool and come discover this incredible author.

TOC:  Space adventures, now that's an interesting topic. How did you come up with the ideas for Jenson Quest?

JBL:  Jenson Quest actually started life as a series of short stories that were all about the Zyll (the bad aliens) and the Keepers (the good aliens). The original idea was that the Keepers were protecting inhabited worlds from the Zyll. Over time this developed and the idea that there could be some species able to help the Keepers was included. It took a while longer for me to create the idea of all the human realms and the Great Drak. The first book, The Rise Of Va'kaar, is actually two of the shorts rolled into a single book.
Jenson himself is named after a real person, the son of a friend of mine (he'll be about 4 now).

Gabriel's Diary - For Your Reading Pleasure

Let me begin by saying that this novella is intended for adult readers that enjoy their romance a little dark and edgy.  When we say exotic tales for the adventurous, we aren't just tempting you with a phrase.  This inside view of Gabriel's sexual adventures, is just that.  A walk into the world of the Master of Seduction, or as some might label it coercion.  If you've read the Tears of Crimson Vampire Series, then you know that Gabriel takes what he wants either by mind manipulation or by using the lure of his supernatural persuasion.

You will journey back in time and walk with Gabriel as he seduces familiar, and some unknown, ladies from history.  When we ran across this Diary, it was shocking to say the very least at how far he would go to obtain the things he desired.  Tears of Crimson invites you to take a walk inside the mind of Gabriel while reminding you to be cautious on how far you delve.  There are some paths that start you on a discovery that will change you forever, this is one of those opportunities.

Taking a bite out of ... Mimi Barbour

Author Mimi Barbour

Thanks for having me on your blog Michelle. I love talking about my career and answering fun questions!! If anyone wants to leave a comment, I'd be happy to present a winner with a free e-book of "His Devious Angel."

How would you describe your writing style?

I would say that my writing style is:

(a.) Humorous - I love adding the element of humor in my stories because in my world, we always try and have a chuckle and a laugh over most things. If I spend a great amount of time with someone who is terribly serious, I get bored and I find myself getting tight inside. But, if I’m with a friend who likes to have a bit of a giggle, I always find I’ve been much more entertained and more likely want to be with that person again.

(b.) Shoot from the hip as far as the plotting goes - Although I always have my beginning and ending figured out in my mind before I start the story. I'm lucky that way as I know a lot of authors who can write to the end and have no idea how to finish off the book.

(c.) Strong character development – Ever since I started reading as a child, I have to admit to being drawn to the characters in the story. It goes without saying that I like there to be conflicts and good story telling, but once I’ve connect with the heroine and hero, I’ll always finish the book. Can’t help myself. I just have to make sure they get their happy ending.

(d.) I must admit that as I write more books, my ability to write stronger conflicts has grown. Or it just might be that the first three stories I published were novellas and now that I’m writing full-length, it gives me more time to build the tensions and interweave intrigue.

What are you usually wearing at three o’clock in the morning?
Pajamas and earplugs!

Important question. Silk, satin, cotton, flannel. What is your sheet of choice and why?

Since I’m a romance writer, I’d love to say satin—but—one time I bought some just to try them and see how they worked, and my husband slid off the bed and so did our blankets – all night long. Decided to go back to our good old percale cotton ones, which are always cool and always feel so smooth. No balls – I hate bally sheets. Hey! Notice I used the word as an adjective!!

Tell us something not very many people know.

I’m a bit of a grouch in the mornings. Most of my friends think I smile all the time because, I usually do. Not so much if it’s really early. I guess you could say I’m more of a night person. Funny, if I write late at night, I don’t normally have to edit too much. If for some strange reason I write in the early morning hours, it’s pretty well all dribble and the bitchiness comes through real clear.

What’s your typical writing day like

About eight am I start my day either on my treadmill or walking the seawall close to our house in Qualicum Beach. Then I tidy the house a bit and ready myself for the day. I eat breakfast in my office while I have my first game of spider (my bad!!). Then I check my e-mails and waste a bunch more time writing notes and checking Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads, etc, etc. I call that my promo time so I don’t feel too guilty.

Then I cuss once I’ve seen that the morning has flown and I haven’t written a word. I quickly grab lunch and have my second game of spider. (my real bad!!) Then I open my manuscript and lose myself for at least three or four hours. On a good day I can write 2,500 to 3,500 words.

If I’m under the gun, I start writing first thing in the morning and go for it all day. If I put my mind to it, I can usually get a good amount written in the morning, edit it for the PM and get another bunch written for the afternoon. It doubles my output when I write in the morning also, but then I'm pretty well incognito when it comes to socializing.

If you could have lunch with one writer, who would it be?

I was going to say some far-out writer no one’s ever heard of, but the truth is Nora Roberts would be my choice. She’s consistently produced books that I love to read and never regret buying. I know when I start one of her stories, I will be entertained, and invariable, she’ll make me smile, chuckle, or even laugh out-loud a few times between the beginning and the end. I’d love to be able to question her about her journey to get where she is now, and most important how she grew as a writer…the aspects of the craft she would consider to be the most important and how best to work on them. And, since she’s a best-selling millionaire, I bet she’d even pick up the tab!

Tell us about your newest release.

My newest release is called “His Devious Angel”. It is a romance about a soldier just returned from the war in Iraq with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and with a bad habit of speeding. And a girl who sees herself like she was as a teen—chubby and unhappy and not as she is now—slender and pretty. It's a humorous story, and the angel who resembles a young Johnny Depp is hilarious and gets our hero in and out of all kinds of situations In this book I've focused on dogs, puppy mills and family ties that will make you laugh and even cry a little. But the ending…it will make you happy.

Do you have anything in the works?

Well…there's a bit of a story here to tell about the next book. You see I recently got involved (thank you Lord!!!) with the Indie Book Collective. After the April promotion called Lucky Days Free Par-tay they advertised that they were organizing an anthology called "Bullets, Brass & Babes".  And anyone interested in joining should write a short story up to 5,000 words and submit it. I thought it would be a cinch and so I wrote my story and sent it in only to be told that I had started the actual book. What they wanted was a short story introducing the main characters for a full-length book. Holy Mackerel!!! Now I had to write another short story about these characters and then still produce a full-length book. Wow – all I'd wanted to do was write a few thousand words so I could be a part of an anthology with some great, best-selling authors. What a blooming pickle!! Therefore you ask me what I'm working on?? It's a full-length suspense story called `You Shot Me!`` which will be the follow up to my short story  in the anthology called "Partners". (Shaking my head – with a sad, hang-dog look plastered over my chubby cheeks) How in the hell do I get myself into these situations???

Where can we find you?

If the angel hadn't forced him to brake, Liam might have killed the gorgeous dog-walker who ran into the street to save a little boy. He owed that woman big time, and he would pay his debt—even if she was cranky and became more difficult with every meeting. After all, how hard could it be to walk a bunch of mangy mutts?

"Men are scum" and no one can tell Sadie any different—it's why she stays away from them. Until a crazy, hotshot soldier runs her down with his convertible. Now she's bruised and sore, and stuck having to accept his help with her elite dog-walking business. Just her luck that some of the expensive pets go missing and Liam decides the puppy-mill rumor needs to be investigated. And once they're forced to spend more time together, darned if a spark doesn’t start to ignite.

Taking a bite out of.... Tammie Clarke Gibbs

Author Tammie Clarke Gibbs

TOC:   So tell us a little more about your writing Tammie. What books do you currently have for sale and what genre do you prefer to write in?

Tammie:  I have two novels currently, and I'm working on two additional titles. ISLAND OF SECRETS is a Time Travel Romantic Gothic, and THE COUNTERFEIT is a Historical Western Romantic Suspense. If I had to choose a favorite genre, it would be difficult because I just love to write, but I tend to mix genres and themes so that what I write is different from the norm. No matter what genre I'm writing in I always have to have some suspense built in. I write books like I enjoy reading, and I don't enjoy predictable plots. I would rather read a book by an author who took a chance on a somewhat plausible plot than read one where I can tell from the beginning how it's going to end. I realize that not all readers share my view in regard to that, but it's the way I feel. I really love when an author steps out of the comfort zone in an effort to entertain readers in a unique way. I'll always support those authors regardless of whether their story is always plausible... It is fiction, right? When it comes to fantasy, I'm not sure rules should apply.

TOC:   It seems like you've been extremely busy this year with creating your own book promotion business and the Freebies for writers. Tell us a little more about your sites and what you hope to accomplish with them.

Tammie:  It has been a busy year as I've explored the many ways I feel I can help other authors that are struggling making the transition from aspiring to professional. Even in the world of traditional publishing there really is no one guidebook or course you can take that tells you how to overcome the jitters and get on with your career. Since I've weathered that storm already and have a combined background in local publishing and graphic arts sometimes it's just difficult NOT to try to help. I guess you could say I have a big heart when it comes to other authors and a desire to see them succeed as I have. The website if anyone is interested in help with marketing, book covers or blog design is http://www.onceuponabookcover.com

TOC:  You redid the cover for A Night at Tears of Crimson, and it's phenomenal. How did you get involved with doing book covers?

Tammie:  I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to design both of my first novels covers. I've been in offline advertising for years and doing covers is really just an extension of that. Before there was a Kindle I marketed several non-fiction titles and did very well with them over the years. Recently, I saw the opportunity to share my vision of a few friends' series books and they just sort of clicked.

TOC:
I noticed your book Island of Secrets is still doing great on Amazon, what is it about that book that seems to continue holding the reader's attention?

Tammie:  ISLAND OF SECRETS just has a like it or hate sort of thing. If you read any of the reviews it's obvious that some people "get" it and others clearly don't. I was intrigued by a story in a local family history book, and that story grew and grew into what I consider a sweeping look at fate and love and those forces that struggle against true love. It's a different book. I combined time-travel and gothic elements together to form a unique sort of book that just continues to find an audience as more and more readers read and share about it. I believe that marketing plays such an important part in the success of any book. Having a professional cover, a good blurb and a sample that pulls people into the story immediately are all fundamental.

TOC: The Counterfit was an incredible book, tell us more about how you came up with the idea for this book.

Tammie:  THE COUNTERFEIT was going to be my fun book. It was originally written for the Harlequin Historical line, but over time and as the book developed I realized that it was much more than what I'd originally started out to write. The general concept for the novel came from hours of pouring over family histories and period nonfiction. I love to look at the old photos and on one such occasion, I came across the name Jeremy Loud, and it just seemed to be different and I adopted it for my hero. I've also always been intrigued about the mostly unknown origins of the Secret Service. Few people realize their main function in the beginning was to bring counterfeiters to justice and not to guard the President. I have to say that the characters wrote the entire last third of the book with little to no input from me. LOL.

TOC:   What are you currently working on and when can we expect a new book debut?

Tammie:  I'm currently working on a non-fiction title that will be of special interest to newly published authors. That book should be out within the next couple of weeks. In addition, I'm also working on a new paranormal ( the beginning of a series) and a new historical in follow-up to THE COUNTERFEIT.

TOC:   Outside of writing, "What do you enjoy doing with your free time?"

Tammie:  That's a good question. I've often joked that I don't have hobbies that don't generate income. What I mean by that is that I really enjoy all of my jobs. Once upon a time I loved to horseback ride, and it's one of my goals to start again. There really is no better feeling than riding with the wind in your hair across a field of green or walking slowly down a worn but wooded path. I also enjoy photography and would love to devote more time to exploring all those places I hope to take my characters in the years to come. I love to explore, shop antique shops and out of the way places most other people have no use for. If you said that I was eclectic, you'd be right.

TOC:    Could you tell our readers where to find out more about your work?

Tammie:  I'd love for them to visit me online at any and all of the places I frequent: http://www.tammieclarkegibbs.com @tammiegibbs on Twitter You can reach my blog and Facebook pages through links on my website. They can also email me with comments or questions at tammiecgibbs@yahoo.com

TOC:    Thank you so much for taking time out of your hectic business to sit down and talk with us. Before you leave do you have any advice for new authors?

Tammie:  If I had to give advice to a new author, I guess it would be dual advice. If you aspire to write you must write, putting all doubts aside. Only when you conquer the page and complete your first story or novel will you truly have a sense for whether this is the life for you. Remember that many aspire, but few are willing to put the work into their goal that is required. If you are already published but perhaps overwhelmed, take heart because the hardest part is over, you've written a book, and it's out there. Now it's time to embrace another role and make sure that you're giving your work of art the best possible chance by making sure it's marketed correctly. I know it's scary, but it's really not that bad and will pay off in dividends for many years.

Alexander Skarsgard -Fifty Shades of Grey

What do you get when you take the sexiest man on earth and the hottest book out there and mix them together?  Every woman's total fantasy, that's what.  Just heard through the grapevine, well actually it was Gather.com that sexy Alexander Skarsgard has shown an interest in playing Christian Grey. Now I don't know about the rest of you, but the thought of this gorgeous man in that incredible role just takes my breath away.

For those of you (and I'm assuming you are from another planet) that haven't heard about Fifty Shades of Grey, it's a romance book with a strong theme of BDSM. You can read my review for this book on Amazon here.  Needless to say I was blown away by the book, but hearing this news, well I'm not sure my heart can take it.

Most of us know Alexander as the Sexy Sheriff Northman on True Blood.  There is one scene in particular from True Blood that makes me think he's perfect for this part.  If you're a True Blood fan you'll remember his bondage scenario with his dancer, Yvetta. Christian Grey would be a perfect part for Mr. Skarsgard as far as I'm concerned, and yes I would be the first in line at the theater to see the performance!

If I hear more about this you can be sure I'll be spouting off here about it.  This is like a dream come true if it happens, and I have to admit I'm chomping at the bit to find out how it all plays out.  In case you haven't figured it out by now this is my dream role for Alexander!

Sweet Dreams,
Love Michelle

Taking a bite out of... Violet Patterson

There's nothing we love more at Tears of Crimson than fantasy and paranormal, so when we caught Violet Patterson and she agreed to be lured into the lair we jumped at the chance.  We did have a few thoughts of keeping her here indefinitely, but after careful contemplation we decided that wouldn't be fair to her readers!

TOC: We've been looking over your list of books on Amazon and it looks like you've been extremely busy this year! Would you like to share with our readers what books you have available right now?

VIOLET: Thank you!  It has been a busy year.  In November I released my first installment of the Emerald Seer Series – Ryder on the Storm.  In December, I released the sequel, Light My Fire.  By January, the third installment, End of the Night and an accompanying novella, Whiskey, Mystics and Men were well under way.  I just released the novella and plan to have End of the Night ready to go this summer.  I’ve also recently released a the first in a YA/epic fantasy series, Estelan (as Trace Broyles).

TOC: So many delicious titles to choose from, which one do you recommend to start off and why?

VIOLET:  Definitely start with Ryder on the Storm.  Since the series centers around Storm Sullivan it is important to learn her backstory.  Also, I personally find Ryder to be yummy.

TOC: Ryder on the Storm is really making it's way up the chart! Could you tell us a little more about how you came up with the idea for this book?

VIOLET:  Actually, that is a funny story.  I have been working on Estelan for years and I was talking to a coworker about it when she suggested I try my hand at romance.   You see, initially Estelan was to be an adult novel and there were some adult content scenes that my friend beta read for me.  She saw something there and made the suggestion.  It started out as a joke but turned into so much more.  It truly just hit me, the idea for Storm and the Seraphs, everything else just fell into place after that.  I am a big fan of the Doors and thought to name each book in this series after one of their songs.

TOC: The characters in your books are so vibrant. If you had to choose one character as your favorite, who would it be and why?

VIOLET: That is a tough question.  I feel so connected to all of them but I am partial to Lucian.  He is a combination of the best and worst characteristics of my closest male friends.  He is headstrong and sarcastic but also jealous and possessive.  I truly enjoyed writing Light My Fire – which incidentally is my husband’s favorite of the series.

TOC: What can we look forward to in the near future as far as books Violet?

VIOLET:  End of the Night will be out this summer if all goes well.  I am pretty confident it will supplant Light My Fire as my favorite.  For the first time readers will see inside Damarra’s head and get a much better look into not only the Sullivan history but the very foundations of this supernatural world.  I intend to have one more installment to tie things up but have some ideas for another series with some possible crossover of characters.

TOC: I know all of our readers are dying to learn more about you! Where can they find out more about your books and you as a writer?

VIOLET: I have been keeping things kind of quiet on the personal front.  I have two awesome kids and a very supportive husband but I am a firm believer of keeping some things private.  I do try to update my blogs – http://emeraldseer.blogspot.com and http://creatingestelan.blogspot.com and I have Facebook author pages for Violet Patterson and Trace Broyles that are public.

TOC: I'm sure you get asked this all the time, but what are your thoughts on the Supernatural?

VIOLET:  I find the idea of supernatural influences to be fascinating.  There are things in this world that are completely inexplicable – they occur every day, sometimes in the simplest, most unexpected places.  I want to believe in something more because it gives me hope and feeds my imagination.

TOC: When it comes to the artwork for your books, how do you come up with ideas?

VIOLET: Actually, the fabulous Tammie Gibbs did the covers for my Emerald Seer Series and Barbara Ivie Green did the gorgeous cover for Estelan.  I had to give very little input to Tammie or Barbara for them to turn out those amazing covers.  I tip my hat to them both!

TOC: Thank you so much for taking time out of your hectic schedule to sit down with us. Can you offer the new authors any tidbits of advice?

VIOLET:  Edit, edit, edit some more, upload your book to Createspace to get a proof and then re-edit by reading it aloud.  I put each of my books through 6-8 edits (including the paper proof) and I am sure there are still some errors.  Aside from that, be patient and develop a very thick skin!!

TOC: It's been a load of fun Violet and we hope you stop in again soon. Before we let you out of here, there's one more question I've been dying to ask. What do you do when you're not writing?

VIOLET:  Thanks for having me!  It’s been a great time.  As I said before, I am a mom and my kiddos are my priority as much as they are my inspiration.  I am working hard to get out of my current career in social services so I can devote more time to my family and my writing – and possibly open a bakery!  Thank you so much!

Taking a bite out of.. Author Brian Bigelow

We ran across Author Brian Bigelow just as he was debuting his new book "Confessions of a Porn Shop Clerk".  The Tears of Crimson Mansion was really excited to find out more about this book and the author behind it.  Little did we know that Brian was a man of many talents and this interview ended up opening our eyes to an incredible author.  We hope you enjoy the walk into the life of Brian Bigelow!

TOC:  It's really great to have you here Brian and thank you.  Could
you tell my readers a little more about you?

I'm now living in an empty nest with my wife Brandy, a cat that is
quite the critic and a Chihuahua that protects us from statues and
fire hydrants. Living in an empty nest has allowed me to begin writing
for the first time.

TOC:  I've noticed you've written books about job interviews and
gardening, what made you decide to cover those topics?

I've had to do a lot of job hunting until the last couple of years,
many of the jobs I worked at relocated elsewhere. Late last year my
two Sons still couldn't or wouldn't find jobs which is when I wrote
the first job hunting book, to try to impart a little wisdom from the
trenches so to speak. Originally it was only intended as Father to Son
advice. Since then I've written one that is meant more for the average
person and I'm wanting to do something about unemployment. It's still
so tough to find a job though it is getting a bit better slowly.

Why I wrote the gardening manual is that we have a garden at home.
Because of the research that I had to do for the gardening manual I'll
now have an even better garden. Also, I want to help people with
getting their own gardens going everywhere. Fresh flowers and
vegetables just outside your door is a great thing.

TOC:  I heard through the grapevine that you're working on a different
kind of book that talks about your job in the Porn Shop industry?
What's that all about?

Yes, it is about different things that have happened in a porn shop
over the last two years of working there. Some things are frankly
quite shocking and there are a few things are extremely funny. Didn't
realize how funny until I began writing about them so I've been
laughing for several days now while I've been working on the book. I
haven't laughed this much in years. Because of certain considerations
no persons name is used in the book or what time something happened.
If foul language or sex toys being discussed would bother you then you
won't want to get a copy.

TOC:  What made you decide on a career in writing?

My Sons needed jobs was were it all began for me, it wasn't to become
a best-selling author. But since that beginning I've learned that I
really like writing a lot, it brings me a lot of enjoyment.

TOC:  So I've got to ask, what's the hardest part about working in an
adult toy shop?

On that question we won't go where I was thinking first went. It's
actually one of the easiest jobs I've ever worked at in my entire
life. There really isn't any limits on what you say on the job and
there's a lot of fun stuff in the store. I also only live about 10
minutes away by bicycle so the commute isn't even an issue.

TOC:  From what I understand you have a business history in computers?
How big of a change was that to go from to where you're at now?

Years ago I had a computer repair business where I contracted back in
the late 80's, early 90's. More recently I also worked on a couple of
IT help desks for HP and Comcast, the HP job relocated to another
city. I don't miss the constant study that I used to have to do just
to keep up with the way hardware and software constantly changes. One
thing that is constant in computers is that they are always changing.
Don't think I want to go back to soldering parts in computer circuits
again like the way it used to be done.

TOC:  What fuels your creativity?

I love learning new things about myself, what I'm writing about and
pushing my limits. It's like I'm discovering a whole new piece of
myself with every book that I write.

TOC:  Any advice that you'd care to offer to new authors?

Organize your entire life so that you will have the most amount of
time to write. If you don't organize it you won't get much writing
done. It does help to multi-task also, there are so many things to pay
attention to at the same time. This is where my call center work
experience has been very helpful.

TOC:  Thanks so much for stopping by Tears of Crimson to talk with us
Brian.  Is there anything else you'd like to leave my readers
with?

Taking a bite out of... Author SJ Byrne

I lured author SJ Byrnes into the Tears of Crimson Lair to find out what she's working on and have to say that I discovered an incredible lady with amazing talent.  Pull up a bar-stool and get to know this incredible author and discover a rare hidden treasure.

TOC: When you write, what fuels that creative urge to keep you motivated to finish?

The characters are what motivate me - literally! They will chat up a storm in my head when they think its time for me to be writing. I want to give them their voice - let their story be told.

I never know what is going to flow through and that is exciting.

TOC: Are there any books that really impacted you, and if so what are they and why?

The Outlander series had the biggest impact on me. I read the first book back in 1991 - got a 1st Edition Outlander hardback out of the Waldenbooks $1 bin!!! Yea, I still have it - got it signed by Diana Gabaldon to ME at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games several years back. She wanted to make sure I knew it would decrease its value, but I won't be getting rid of that book! To have something that wonderful signed from a brilliant author to an Indie Author just blows me away! I also fell in love with Scotland from those books - who didn't?! It took me another 17 years to find my way to Scotland but when I did, it was all I had hoped and more - it stole my heart all over again and is home to me. Thank you Diana for giving me that gift!! (have always wanted to thank her!)

TOC: As an author we all fear that dreaded bad review. How do you cope with bad reviews that you feel are unwarranted?

Oh that is a dozie! Like every other aspect in life, there are those who love to do nothing more than bring people down. That is what these reviews are all about. It's not about how good the book really is - story line or grammar - it's about putting someone down. Every author who starts making good sales can expect to have these reviews - look up Anne Rice and Stephen King, they got um too! I try to remind myself this is not a personal attack, no matter how much it feels like one. If  I can keep my sense of humor about it, I'm golden. A group of writers I'm very close with have decided that when we get that dreaded review, we will go to the pages of mega successful authors and read their nasty reviews and feel better for it! Although writing most times is a solitary experience, we are not alone. =)

TOC: Do you base your books on real life experiences or try to stretch outside that limitation?

Mmmm, yes to both. The best fiction is drawn from real life experiences and cannot be made up! Though I have to say, the bits pulled from my life are small moments - actions that give the writing more depth and realism.

The heavy situations, the tragic heart-breaking moments, they are not mine; they belong to the characters.

TOC: What has been the most rewarding experience of becoming an author?

Holding the proof copy in my hands - I cried that day. My Butterfly was 5 years in the making, but getting published is a goal I've been manifesting for 18 years.

TOC: I have to ask, what has been the single most frustrating part of being an author?

Procrastination! We all deal with it, let it get in the way of our hearts desire - to be writing! I can sit down with all the intention in the world that I am going to write and find myself blindsided by

procrastination - emails, Facebook, Twitter, marketing plans, writers groups, texts from loved ones...you name it, it'll stop you if you let it!

TOC: What projects are you currently working on, and when will they be available?

My daughter Alex and I have teamed up on a couple of pieces. The biggest being a new paranormal series. The first book is titled 'Once A Druid' and our goal is to have it published by Summer's end.

(if not sooner - procrastination BE GONE!)

TOC: Where can people find out more about you and your work?

I have a steady presence on Facebook and Twitter, they can also follow my blog - there is some great music there by The Piano Guys, I just love cello music!

TOC: Can you offer any thoughts of wisdom to new authors who are just starting out?

Swallow your fear and do it anyway!!! Get into a group, they can answer your questions and guide you through the Indie Process if that's the route you plan to take. Don't take no for an answer and believe in your writing!

You will always be your biggest cheerleader. =)

Taking a Bite out of... I mean interviewing!

We've opened up the crypt, um I mean the mansion at Tears of Crimson for interviews and wanted to let everyone know.  We delved into the cellar and pulled out our best bottle of red wine (I really hope people are buying that it's actually wine or I'll have a problem with the Department of Health again), and invited some incredible people to stop by and serve... um talk with us.  As most of you know, we really love humans (and no not just the ones we have for dinner) and we've been fortunate enough to make some great friends over the years.  That being said, we will be interviewing authors from all walks of life, not just those that share our fondness for blood.

We hope you'll stop in and get to know some incredible people and not hold it against them if they don't enjoy sinking their fangs in.  We can't all be perfect!  As far as we're concerned humans are really just great to eat, I mean talk with no matter what they do for a living.  We'll be doing all our interviews during the day because we all know that the vampires around this place get a little hungry at night and sometimes don't think before they snack.  So pull up a chair and come join us in the Tears of Crimson mansion, we promise to keep you safe as long as you pass the word along to your friends!

Tears of Crimson Victims!

Oh and by the way, if you'd like to become dinner... um get interviewed that is, drop us a line!
